Entitled “So the World May Know”, the lessons focused on overcoming the hindrances that prevent us from advancing God’s Kingdom.

The conference was held in the same location as last year’s singles retreat so we were all very familiar with the astonishing, yet simple, beauty of Blue Mountain. Singles travelled to Collingwood from as far away as New Hampshire, Ohio, Halifax and Calgary.

Fritz Larco, of the New Hampshire church, was inspired by the diverse cultures in the singles ministry, saying, "I loved how many different cultures were present at the conference! It was wonderful."

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ULf5FYCM6gA/Tp7cib8y8JI/AAAAAAAAAII/Haai1cpo3Cw/s320/tnt1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5665207865455079570" />

The weekend started with a lesson by Mike Abrokwah on true worship, on being in the presence of God and being in tune with what He wants. Saturday morning started off with a bang as Rav Toor spoke with great vulnerability on overcoming failure and rediscovering the grace of God. The breakout classes spoke about dying to ourselves, having a thirst for personal growth, and overcoming fear. Stanley Dumornay continued powerfully with his lesson "So the Works of God Might Be Displayed", teaching us that adversity and disaster aren't really setbacks, but opportunities for God’s power to be revealed in us.

“I was inspired by what God can do through the most unsuccessful people in the eyes of the world,” states Jamila Gubbels from the church in Ottawa.

In addition to the powerful lessons, the weekend included the baptism of Chelsie Munroe in Lake Huron; a new dating couple, Andrew Peterkin and Naz Hagos; a newly engaged couple Philip Nelson and Roxanne Chambers; and a 70s-themed, Saturday night dance that featured a “Best 70s Outfit” contest, poetry readings, karaoke and games, and lots of energetic dancing.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0eH8ewdX8g8/Tp7cKQ1QvdI/AAAAAAAAAH8/D1MBJ0iHGCQ/s320/tnt2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5665207450153827794" />

The weekend was brought to a powerful close with Stanley Dumornay’s Sunday morning message “So the World May Know”. The message highlighted how Jesus loved and served the twelve disciples and instilled in them His passion for the salvation of the world. When we exemplify His love and demonstrate His heart to serve, the world will know that we are His disciples.

Hearts were aflame with excitement as we realized the promises God held for each one of us. The fellowship was abuzz with renewed energy and exhilaration. As the conference ended, each disciple was challenged and inspired to make practical decisions to change and overcome. Many friendships were sparked or renewed and amazing fellowship was had by all. Dean Hovey-Smith of the Halifax church summarized how we all felt, saying, “the conference was very impacting on my soul and I learned so much!”

The Halifax Church celebrates a special Baptism!

On June 24th,2011, the Halifax Dartmouth Church of Christ (HDCC) celebrated the incredible Baptism(and “re-birth”) of Jackie McLaughlin.

The story ofthis miracle can best told through the words of her Step-Daughter:

“My stepmom, Jackie, moved in with our familywhen I was 5 years old. I only saw mymother for a few weeks a year so Jackie really was my mother-figure growingup. She always believed in God but myfather was against church so none of us really went. During my teen years, things were rocky athome and I couldn't wait to run off to the big city and escape. Little did I know, that the Lord wasfollowing me! I became a Christianduring my first semester at York University and immediately started telling myfamily about my changes. Jackie wasalways supportive, and I was so grateful when a church was finally planted inHalifax. A little over 10 years ago,Jackie came to church with me once and signed herself up for Women's Day. I wasecstatic. After much studying of the Bible with the women in the Halifaxchurch, Jackie decided that part of her repentance was to legally marry my dad,since they had been living together for 29 years. Disciples served all through the wedding,hosted a shower for her, and Greg Taylor even performed the ceremony. Yet after further study, Jackie walked awayfrom studies and was not ready for the commitment. Ten years later, her health had really takena toll on her and she had nearly died several times. My husband, children, Bible Talk, and I werepraying fervently for God to move in Jackie's heart. Then Jackie and I spoke, and she (on her own)asked me if I would help her get right with God! Tears of joy were everywhere, and I flew upto Halifax to spend some time with her and to study, pray, and talk. The wonderful women of the Halifax church,especially Nancy Taylor and Lynn Gallagher continued studying with her. Lessthan a month later, my family and I drove up for a visit and had a wonderfultime of rejoicing as we were able to be there to see Jackie baptized. I am extremely grateful for the love ofChrist that is so evident in the church in Halifax; do everything from hospitalvisits to making a video of the special occasion for us! I am also grateful that back when I was 5years old, God had a plan when he put Jackie into my life. Her faith and strength continually inspire me,as she faces her life with courage and joy, despite constant illness andnegative feedback, and discouragement from my father. I praise God daily for how he has moved, andI have grown in my trust in him and his timing. (Jeremiah 29:11-13)”, said Jennifer Hutchins.

“Jackie was a pure joy to study theBible with. Nick is a close, long-time friend of Katherine, a sister who was baptized almost a month earlier in the same ministry. Having visited a campus devotional in July, Nick started his own journey to the Kingdom paved with significant opposition and personal challenges. Through this time, his heart blossomed into one of gratitude, servitude and hunger for God’s word.

In the meantime, Stewart Escalona was also trekking along the path to find life. Stewart was met on the street by Mike, the Singles ministry leader in the Central Region, who invited him to look into the truth of the Bible. The following Sunday, Stewart arrived with his brother and met three disciples with whom he was already acquainted from his high school. Since the pleasant coincidence, Stewart had been earnestly digging in the Bible for the truth about Christianity and has refined his convictions about Jesus, God’s word and discipleship.

The excitement for the weekend baptism spiked as the announcement of the double baptism, resonated in the OISE classroom used for the Campus devotionals. Both men were baptized on Saturday, August 13th, 2011 at the Ivey family’s residence. Stewart will be continuing his studies in Law at York in the fall while Nick will be resuming his degree in Business at Ryerson next year.
Congratulations Stewart and Nick!

Kalala's Moving to Calgary!

Under the leadership of Mike and Helen Luzine, the Rocky Mountain Church of Christ has continued to have a tremendous influence in the great city of Calgary! One of the most pressing needs over the past year has been to find someone who can help build a Campus Ministry in the church. In keeping with our commitment to the 2020 Vision, the leadership of the Toronto Church has spent considerable time thinking and praying about who could be sent out to meet these needs. Seeing brothers and sisters making these decisions in faith reminds us of the decision that each disciple has made to embrace Jesus’ mission of seeking and saving the lost. Please join with us in praying that God will inspire the hearts of the brothers and sisters across Canada as we continue to make plans to evangelize this great nation!

In Him,
The Elders and Evangelists

Toronto Church of Christ

Lives Changed Forever!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-237SQF2rmy0/Tja2HHYqcMI/AAAAAAAAAHA/2z0joHNmCIo/s200/Katherine.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635892217058586818" />
On Thursday, July 14, 2011, Katherine Edwards was added into God's Kingdom and joined the Toronto Campus Ministry.
Katherine was invited by Philippa, a student at York University about three months earlier. In fact, it was Katherine who sought out help from the sister in hopes of figuring out her spirituality.
During her Bible studies, she has made radical changes and Katherine is now well known for her joyful attitude, her serving heart and her frequent habit of pulling over her car so she can pray! She will continue to study at York this fall in the nursing program.
Congratulations Katherine!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 153px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qyPhvJkEbu4/Tja3RIU80-I/AAAAAAAAAHI/q3vAeGCvX5w/s200/Kariuki%2Bfamily.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635893488621769698" />
It was a very emotional victory for the Kariuki family on Sunday, July 17, 2011 as they witnessed Jamie get baptized. For two and a half years, Eunice, Jamie's mother, and her "prayer warrior" group have petitioned God for Jamie's conversion to Christ. God, who is always faithful, answered their prayers!
Eunice and her "prayer warriors", along with Jeff and Ekua Kariuki (Jamie's uncle and aunt, also disciples) were among the number who watched Jamie get baptized that afternoon. Several attendees noted Jamie's blossomed generosity, his increased concerned for others and his newfound passion for sharing his faith during his long journey to make the convictions taught his own.
Jamie will be going into his first year of college in the next coming months.
Congratulations Jamie!

Isaac, a student at UTM, was baptized!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 173px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1DsEkOpYWZ4/TjAXNdaNbKI/AAAAAAAAAG4/wLa8g2XeSYs/s200/Issac.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634028653840788642" />
Very excitingly, this past Monday, July 11, Isaac, a student from the University of Toronto – Mississauga Campus, was added to the Kingdom!
It is an amazing victory as Josh Udall and Taryn Nandan, interns for the West Region of the Toronto Church of Christ, have been diligently evangelizing and studying the Bible with students on UTM.

Isaac is the first campus student to be baptized since the interns have been hired in the West Region for the summer. This year the theme was “Deeper” - calling each one of us to get deeper in our love for God, for the lost and with one another, deeper in the Word, deeper in our character and deeper in our convictions. It was an event that truly allowed the campus ministry to draw even closer as a family, build new friendships and new memories, but also a time that truly challenged each one of us to reflect on where we stood before God. God has called us higher to be radical in all aspects of our Christianity, especially in our devotion to God, to each other, in evangelism and in prayer.

This year we believe that God will do immeasurably more than we can ever imagine! He is the one that will help us to build deep roots, to climb higher and as a result have a life-long passion that will bring glory to God.

ICMC Theme Scripture:  Ephesians 1:9-10
“And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.”

Good News from Newmarket!

May 29th was a historic service for the Newmarket Church of Christ.
We had prepared by praying and fasting for all the Canadian Churches. This was the first of series of meetings that will occur over the next year to see who will be willing to serve in the mission field. It was a very encouraging time as we saw 400 people attend the meeting. It was an afternoon of great worship, information, prayer and fellowship. Guy Hammond, Leo and Connie Teeuwen and Howard and Karen Martin were the church leaders in attendance as well.A presentation was given on London and Kingston which are 2 of our future plantings. Guy Hammond shared about what was going on in Halifax and talked about the need for help as the Halifax church will be pivotal in future church plantings eg.) P.E.I, New Foundland and New Brunswick.

Andrew and Kevin did a great job in breaking down the strategies that we have for future plantings and mission work.

Short term
A. Summer Surge - 0-60 days in an existing church serving, studying the bible with people etc...
B. 1 year challenge - 6months - year in an existing church serving, studying the bible with people etc...

Long term
A. Pass the torch - average 2-3 years (goal...replace yourself) in an existing church or a mission team
B. Going for good - in an existing church or being on a mission team

We then had a time of Q/A and ended the night with more prayer and fellowship
The goal is to have these meetings on an average of 4 times per year
Let us all continue to pray that God will move hearts and make it clear as a church where we need to go.
In Him

Canadian 2020 Vision

<img style="float:left; From the moment the 25 Torontonians walked through the doors, we were greeted with smiles and welcomed with open arms.

Collin (the Ann Arbor Campus Minister) led a powerful devotional the first night. We studied out the character of Joseph, highlighting the perseverance that he demonstrated throughout his life, especially during times of great trial. The first night ended with picture taking and hours of great fellowship. On Saturday morning the men and women were split up for separate devotionals. The brothers were able to hear from 3 campus students as they shared about discipling relationships, sister encouragement, having an impact on our campuses and being mighty men of God. The women met together and Rita and Beth shared a lesson on the Samaritan Woman. Later the sisters went shopping Saturday afternoon to pick up some Michigan apparel, the brothers filled up a van and headed down to the University of Michigan Campus to marvel at its incredible football stadium. Saturday night consisted of a whole bunch of fun and games as the whole crew headed down to the bowling alleys to show off our skills for a couple hours. We then went into the party room to eat some pizza and watch some comedic acts by a few of our beloved campus students. Saturday night ended with a bang as the students went back to the brother’s household for games, dancing…and some more dancing!

Everyone slowly woke up Sunday morning and headed down to Detroit for an afternoon service where Marty and Rita led the hearts of the congregation in communion. As we left the church we were sad to say goodbye to the amazing friends that we had made in just a weekend but were encouraged to know that God has blessed us with incredible brothers and sisters throughout the world!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qYonBTzFnzI/TXE6cs88W_I/AAAAAAAAAGc/CFStkCfB53k/s200/campus%2B3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580305678066277362" />

For more info on Campus Ministry contact Marty Udall at
marty.udall@gmail.com

2011 Winterblast Youth Retreat

This past weekend the Toronto Church of Christ hosted a youth retreat entitled Winterblast! With 108 in attendance from the Toronto, Hamilton, Montreal and Halifax churches, the weekend was a great encouragement for all who attended.

The depth of spirituality and relationships in the teens has grown significantly over the past few months, and to be able to see this first hand over the course of the retreat was truly inspiring. Many of the youth leaders from around the church were able to free up their weekend in order to help Winterblast run so smoothly. It was a great reminder just how blessed we are to have such a sacrificial and talented group of volunteers serving our teens in the church. Having the Locks and Robbins with us for the retreat was a blessing on so many levels. Both Mike and Kevin taught lessons that left a lasting impression on the teens, and Barb and Lisa provided a much needed maturity and encouragement for the young ladies that attended.

Great fun was had by all in the form of late night snacks, early morning QT's, teen vs. leaders ball hockey, hardcore tobogganing, snowshoe soccer and a camp wide karaoke contest! In addition to the main speeches, the teens participated in cabin QT's and d-groups, prayer times and a youth-led worship service on Sunday morning. It was during the service that we were able to see first hand all the incredible ways that God had worked in the teen's hearts over the course of the weekend. After an extended time of singing, we had an "open mic" communion service where teenager after teenager came up to share about all that they were taking away from the retreat. You would have been so proud to hear the level of faith and conviction in the teens as they shared so passionately about their love for God and for each other.

In true Kingdom style, the weekend was capped off with many families picking up their teens from the buses and then rushing off to see Jorge Medranda baptized into Christ! Jorge is the fourth teenager to be baptized in what we believe will be a monumental year in the Toronto Youth and Family Ministry!

Thank you for your continual prayers and support.

In Him,

Kevin Hoecke

Donation of Opthalmic Cameras to St. Lucia by Toronto Western Hospital

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 90px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sc_HxAKXCEg/TVrfD4HecyI/AAAAAAAAAF0/-0zfXLBp28U/s200/hope.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5574012746520752930" />
In January 2010, HOPE worldwide of Canada was able to facilitate the donation of an ophthalmic camera to St. Jude Hospital in Saint Lucia. Ian Brown, a member of the Toronto Church of Christ, who works as a photographer in the Ophthalmic Department of the Toronto Western Hospital, approached HOPE worldwide of Canada to make this donation happen.

In early 2011, Ian Brown let HOPE worldwide of Canada know about two more cameras that the hospital had available to donate. The Toronto Western Hospital graciously donated this equipment crucial to the diagnosis of eye disease. Saint Lucia has the highest per capita rates in the world of diabetes. A major side effect of diabetes is eye disease, and if left untreated, will lead to debilitating blindness. In a developing country such as Saint Lucia, the onset of blindness to the bread winner of a family can send a poor family into a spiral of base poverty.

In 2011, one ophthalmic camera is going to the Gros Islet Polyclinic. Gros Islet is a town in the north of Saint Lucia where many of the island nation's hotels are located, but is surrounded by local villages. The other camera is going to Victoria Hospital located in Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia, which is in North West of the island and close to one of the island's two airports, George F. L. Charles Airport. Victoria Hospital is a public hospital. St. Jude Hospital, which received the first donation in 2010, is near the town of Vieux Fort located in the south of the island near the second airport, Hewanorra International Airport. St. Jude is a public hospital.

Saint Lucia had two other hospitals, one in Soufriere (Soufriere Hospital) located in the south west which sustained major damage from Hurricane Tomas on 30 October 2010 and will need to be rehabilitated. Soufriere was the capital of Saint Lucia when it was ruled by the French and is reputed to be the birth place of Napoleon's Empress Josephine. At the very least she spent much of her childhood in Saint Lucia. A world heritage site is located in Soufriere where the Pitons and the walk-in volcano are located. The Pitons have been named as "one of the top places that must be visited in your lifetime". The Dennery Hospital was also damaged and will be rebuilt at a new location. The decision to construct the new Dennery Hospital at a different site is because the engineers feel that the location is seriously compromised during major flooding within the low lying areas of the village. This was determined after major flooding on 9 October 2010 and during the passage of Hurricane Tomas. Also there have been major problems related to maintenance of equipment and appliances at the current location due to the saline conditions as a result of persistent “sea blast” from the near by Atlantic Ocean. Dennery is a village located east of the island. Both Soufriere Hospital and Dennery Hospital are public hospitals. There is one private hospital, Tapion Hotel located in the capital, Castries.

The photo attached in the usual order shows Consul General of Saint Lucia Stephen Julien, Ian Brown of the Toronto Western Hospital, and Taras Kulish of HOPE worldwide of Canada.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XFfC0ln3eFY/TVrc0x3WQvI/AAAAAAAAAFs/bpj2sUZZcJc/s200/St%2BLucia%2BDonation%2B2011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5574010288121201394" />

Taras Kulish, Country Director
HOPE worldwide of Canada
email: tkulish@smhilaw.com

HOPE Worldwide of Canada Walk-A-Thon

Toronto, Ontario - October 17, 2010

On a beautiful autumn, Sunday morning, the Toronto Church of Christ met together to participate in the annual HOPE Worldwide of Canada Walk-a-thon.
Those involved in the Walk-a-thon raised funds to support ongoing charitable programs in and around the Greater Toronto Area.
Some of the programs are:
- Youth Basketball program
- Youth Tutoring program
- Youth Academy program run in partnership with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation

The day was filled with tremendous fellowship and fun! But the greatest of these is love.”
I Corinthians 13:13

On Sunday, August 29th, Claude Bechard was baptized into Christ at the age of 85. There were many tears of joy as friends and family gathered together to witness this “miracle”. Claude’s wife, Epifania, has been a disciple since September, 1995. She shared about her own conversion and her decision to recommit to her marriage at that time. One of the sisters who studied the Bible with her encouraged her to have faith that Claude could become a Christian, and that it might take 15 years for that to happen. Amazingly, Claude’s baptism occurred 15 years later, short of two weeks, from the date of Epifania’s own conversion!

Epifania shared about how she clung to the scripture in Acts 2:39, “The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.” This promise gave her hope that one day her family would all become disciples and she began praying for them. Her daughter, Lorena, became a Christian, but Claude remained hardened. He told their young daughter, Crystal, “I will never go to that church!” Life became so difficult that Claude and Epifania separated, but Lorena continued to love and serve Claude. She would go to his apartment to clean, and sit down and talk with him about the Bible.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_leXA4-ON74c/TIQClBKL7oI/AAAAAAAAAFU/ewos40LjyKg/s200/Baptism.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513534678797905538" />When Claude was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Epifania was filled with compassion and asked him to come back to live with the family so that she could take care of him. Claude’s heart began to soften. One of the brothers came every day to study the Bible with him. At first, Claude could only study for 15 minutes. One or two scriptures were all he could handle. But the more they met together, the more he understood and the more he wanted! He began to read whole books of the Bible – to read and re-read the scriptures from the Bible studies, and to apply the Word to his life. Finally, the power of the cross cut his heart and he was ready to make Jesus Lord.

Claude’s conversion shows us that it is never too late to change, that God is faithful and that love never fails! Seeing this family reunited, filled with joy and united in Christ gives us hope for our own families.

In Christ,
Ed Bahula
Elder, Toronto Church of Christ

Another Amazing August!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 100px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_leXA4-ON74c/TH3dfHhAiII/AAAAAAAAAFE/stBv3Lz94n0/s200/authentic_invert.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511805045634533506" />
August is one of the best months in the Toronto Church because of the annual Youth Camps.
This year, thanks to the generous donations of the membership through the Special Missions Contribution, we sent 3 bus-loads of preteens & teens to Camp Laurel in Maine, USA.
It's no small feat to tear away 150 campers from protective parents, drive 14 hours, ...
(read more click here)

Faith Building Sunday in Vancouver

Yesterday (July 25), at our worship service, there was so much good news shared that it would have been impossible to leave discouraged. Rob Baldwin was baptized into Christ on Saturday night. His wife, Nimfa, read her "restoration letter" to the church on Sunday. What an amazing story of how an old friendship and one invitation to church changed one couple's life for eternity! God definitely orchestrated that meeting!

It was awesome to hear from Barish and Ana Golland and how they've already met and reached out to a couple who are students at UBC. Yet they didn't meet them on campus but at the IKEA in Richmond because they overheard a couple speaking Turkish! If that isn't God showing us that he has heard and answered our prayers, I don't know what is.

Then there was the video of the VCOC youth who attended the NW Camp. The quality and the content of the video was nothing short of inspiring - to hear how that week has impacted our sons and daughters and led each of them to make some deeply spiritual decisions was both convicting and encouraging.

And finally we saw so many friends and family visiting with us, even some whom none of us invited but who came just because they heard about the church indirectly. God is working in us, through us and for us! I am incredibly encouraged and believe that God is putting his stamp of approval and support on the direction we're headed and the plans that we've made. I know that the rest of 2010 is going to be amazing. The train is pulling out of the station - all aboard!

Hardcore Summer

We just got back an absolutely amazing and inspiring North West Youth Camp (July 5-10), entitled "Hardcore". It was lead so professionally and compassionately by Jermaine and Stefanie Peacock (leaders of the Spokane Church). I was so inspired by our week there that I decided to dedicate all the Vancouver Church of Christ worship services for the rest of the summer to our Youth Ministries (High School and Middle School) and to our Campus Ministry (to be restarted this fall). What does that mean?

+ All worship services for the rest of the summer will be officially casual dress, even for those who are leading songs, praying or preaching up front.
+ All worship services will be high energy in terms of the content, delivery and spirit of all songs, prayers and preaching.
+ The young men and women of the high school and middle school ministries will be given opportunities, in various ways, to participate in leading and/or sharing in the worship services.
+ We are asking that all VCOC members dedicate themselves to praying for these ministries and to personally encouraging all these young people and their parents as they strive to seek God, know God and do his will.

Our goal in all of this is to keep the momentum going and to emphasize how vital these ministries are to these young men and women, their parents, the congregation and our fellowship of churches. Giving each and every one of them the best opportunity and the most encouragement possible to seek God, know God and to do his will is our plan and our purpose.

"This is hardcore, with my double edged sword; I'mma live my life, fi-fi-fightin' for the Lord"

Fired Up for God!

In Vancouver, the month of June, weather-wise, has been cooler than normal, cloudier than normal and rainier than normal, but the disciples have been striving to shine and be hot for God!

+Our Special Ministry Contribution has now reached almost $30,000!
+We are preparing for the arrival of the Gollands from Istanbul.
+We are reorganizing our Midweek Discussion Groups to become Life Groups.
+We are planning for a Fall 2010 evangelistic campaign entitled, "Come and See" that will involve the restarting of our campus ministry and will lead up to our big 20th anniversary weekend (October 23 & 24) ending with a worship service at Michael J. On his way home from Hope Worldwide's Global Summit, he decided to drop in on the church and we joyfully welcomed the opportunity to hear him share and preach. He shared about the flood last fall that claimed 300 lives and impacted the living circumstances of millions. It was heartbreaking and yet at the same time inspiring as the Christians rose to the challenge and became for many the source of life sustaining shelter, food and clothing. Koko graciously thanked the VCOC members for their generosity in giving to the relief fund, but as we know, it is impossible to out-give God. Thus we received back more last Sunday than we gave last fall as Koko called us to continue to put our faith into action and have an impact on our world for Christ.

Parenting Workshop in Seattle

What an amazing time we had in Seattle last Saturday (May 15) as a few hundred parents gathered together to learn and to grow in the most amazing trust that God has given us - raising our children! As parents we never feel adequate or complete. It seems the moment we celebrate one victory a new challenge comes along that calls on us to adapt. Each child is so different, even within the same family. What works for one does not work for all. It is up to us, as parent, to understand certain principles and apply those principles with wisdom, grace and truth to our relationships with our children.

Stephany and Jermaine Peacock taught us that we need to understand our own upbringing and how that influences our approach to parenting - whether for good or bad. We need to decide what our values and goals are and we need to make sure we that our parenting is truly God-centred. He is our best example of what it means and takes to love and raise our kids.

Sara and Brian Felushko taught the need for compassionate communication with our children and their need to be respected and heard, so that we can make wise decisions about meeting their most crucial needs. Connection and cooperation can be achieved through compassionate communication regardless of the age of the child or the present state of the relationship. As Paul wrote, "Love never fails".

Many great discussions followed both workshops and many parents left with directed, encouraged and with hope for even the most difficult situations. Thanks to the leadership of the Seattle church for hosting this event!

Halifax Hosts Canadian Church Leaders Conference

Recently, during the last week of April, the Halifax Dartmouth Church of Christ was the proud host of the Canadian Church Leaders Conference! On the Friday night, members of the HDCC hosted an informal reception to all of the leaders, at the Maritime Museum down on the waterfront of Halifax. A grand time was had by all, allowing many to reconnect with old friends, while others were able to meet the leaders for the first time. Now each day follows a specific plan as revealed by the subtitles: READ, REFLECT, PRAY & OBEY. While none of us want our time with God to be overly structured, ritualistic and lifeless, most would agree that without some structure, but instead relying totally on the feelings of the moment, either our quiet times don't happen or they are often shallow and lack impact.

READ, REFLECT, PRAY & OBEY is a structured plan for communing with God, where we first listen to God through the reading of his word and then we reflect on what we have read. In relationship terms, this is called "active listening". Then we talk to him in prayer, specifically responding to what we heard God say to us in the scripture, expressing our gratitude, our humility, our hope and asking for his help. Finally, by answering some practical questions, we set our hearts on obeying God's will as revealed by the Holy Spirit.

Following such a structure, day by day, from the heart, will result in a transformational experience, as we draw closer to God and are empowered to walk as Jesus walked. Every year the women return inspired, and this year was no exception. The theme for this year’s retreat was entitled “Believe,” named after the theme for the Ottawa Church in 2010. Our guest speaker was Gillianne Brisebois from the Montreal Church of Christ, who titled her message “Daddy’s Girl” reminding us to live our lives believing that we daughters of God. She encouraged us not to be legalistic and routine about our relationship with God, something that many women, including me, can fall into sometimes. Karen Martin’s communion message on Sunday was based on the same theme as she encouraged us to live secure lives believing we are forgiven.
During the retreat, we were asked to choose four partners, one four each season of the year, and then assigned to a different activity with each one: prayer with your spring partner, dinner with your summer partner, a time of confession with your fall partner, and a hang out time with your winter partner after returning. This encouraged building new friendships while at the same time drawing closer to God. In between the prayer times and messages, there was of course the opportunity to watch some spiritual movies, or enjoy a walk by the lake. This year proved to be a blast and we look forward to making long lasting changes and returning next year.

Michelle Baptista

Jessica Burrage Was Baptized!

Excitingly, and to the amazement of all members of the Halifax Dartmouth Church of Christ, Jessica Burrage was recently baptized! They recently established a new ministry called Purity Restored (www.purityrestored.com) that helps couples and individuals find healing and hope after purity struggles. They have authored a CD set together, “Building a Pure Marriage in an Impure World,” and travel extensively leading marriage retreats and purity seminars. Robin and Dave live near Chicago, Illinois and have 3 adult children.

David Weidner is the author of a CD series, “Pure in Heart—Biblical Principles for Restoring Purity” (www.purityrestored.com. Through leading recovery groups and conducting “Pure in Heart” seminars, David has helped bring fresh hope to men who long to restore their personal purity.

Robin Weidner is the author of Secure in Heart—Overcoming Insecurity in a Woman’s Life (www.secureinheart.com). This popular book has launched Robin into a new world of outreach to women, including speaking at Secure in Heart women’s events across the country and appearing on local and national Christian radio and television shows. Robin also owns a thriving copywriting business, writing marketing materials and other communications for national and international clients. She is currently finishing a second book based on the life of Eve.

“Picturing the purely transparent relationship of Adam and Eve has given my wife and a vision for our future together. As we listened to Dave and Robin share the complete security that the first husband and wife had with each other and our Father in heaven, we realized that God was not going to restore our relationship to a time when it was better; rather, we believe he is going to take us to a place we have never been. And that is truly exciting. Dave and Robin, you’re truly a blessing to the Kingdom of God.” Matt and Mona, Minneapolis

Location: Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa, Harrison Hot Springs, B.C. The theme for 2010 in the West is DEVOTED! The goal is for each and every member to be fully DEVOTED to the Lord in 2010. So far in the last 7 weeks God has blessed us with 7 baptisms and restorations. It has been very encouraging to see people turn their hearts to God and become Christians as well as seeing people return to the Lord and His church. As we focus on being DEVOTED to God, one another and our communities we know that will God to continue to do a great work through us all.
Please pray for us as we will be praying for you.

To Him Be the Glory and Praise Forever and Ever
Amen.

The Stones Speak Through Dr. Jacoby

What an amazing morning it was, last Sunday (March 7) in Vancouver! Dr. Douglas Jacoby spoke to us on the subject of "Archaeology and the Bible: The Stones Tell the Story". And what a story it was. The disciples were encouraged as were many of our friends and family. We had our largest crowd of the year who came for an early start (9:30 a.m.) and didn't leave until nearly 1 p.m. But people left encouraged, strengthened in their faith and excited about the "evidence" that illustrates and confirms the reality of the scriptures. Some who thought that a service devoted to archaeology would be boring, left saying things like, "I could have stayed and listened for much longer. That was awesome." Thank you Douglas for the teaching. Thank you, Father, for leaving us "evidence" that confirms our faith.

Dr. Douglas Jacoby in Vancouver

We're very excited to announce that Dr. Douglas Jacoby will be speaking at the worship service of the Vancouver Church of Christ on Sunday March 7. Our service that day will begin at 9:30 a.m. complete with a full Kingdom Kids program. Douglas will speak during the service on "Archaeology and the New Testament". After a brief break, we will resume our time together at 11:30 and hear Douglas speak on "Archaeology and the Old Testament". During that session we will be providing supervised childcare. We meet at the Justice Institute of British Columbia in the main auditorium (715 McBride Boulevard, New Westminster, B.C.).

Dr. Jacoby is a well known teacher among the International Churches of Christ with well over 20 years experience. Via his numerous books and debates with Muslim, Jewish and atheistic scholars he is becoming increasingly better known outside our fellowship of churches. If you are unfamiliar with his work, check out his website (www.douglasjacoby.com).

If you are in the Vancouver area, or can be, on that weekend, please feel free to join us and find out how recent archaeological discoveries have impacted our understanding of Bible. I guarantee that you will be strengthened in your faith.

Welcome

Welcome to the Canadian International Churches of Christ News blog! In the interest of developing stronger ties between our churches in Canada, I have set up this blog and have invited evangelists and elders in our family of churches to post news here on a consistent basis. It is my hope that this is one way we can be "in the know" when it comes to what is going on across our great land, so that we can rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep and always keep each other in our prayers.

Please visit this site often, as I am anticipating that there will be frequent updates posted by brothers and sisters from Victoria to Halifax. Stay in touch, stay in tune and pray for God to do great things with us, in us and through us to his glory!
